Plant Protect

Approximately 42% of all endangered or threatened species are due to the prescence of invasive species in their environment.

Mission

Much of the world's species are endangered because of invasive species, which are species which invade environments different than their natural ones. This leads to the native species in this environment having to compete for resources, often threatening their rates of survival. With our app, we aim to help nature enthusiasts detect such species to protect native, threatened species.

Protect Native Species

Invasive species are a prime reason why native species aren't able to survive in their own ecosystem.

Maintain Biodiversity

Invasive species also destroy the biodiversity of the nature they invade.

Maintain Sustainable Food Chains

Unfortunately, invasive species also can break up a sustainable food chain, draining resources for other species.

Prevent uncontrollable growth

Invasive species can grow at an extremely rapid rate, so stopping them early is paramount.

Protect Native Species

By detecting the presence of invasive species, we can prevent the decline of native species that oftentimes are endangered in their natural habitats.

Raise Awareness

Plant Protect plans to raise awareness about the problem of invasive species displacing native, endangered species from the environments where they thrive the most.

Our App's ML

Our app uses machine learning to detect whether a plant is non-invasive, or whether it is one of the 4 most common invasive species in America - Wisteria, Purple Loosestrife, Japanese Barberry, or Japanese Honeysuckle. Images of the all the following planning are shown below!

Non-Invasive Species

a purple, flowery wisteria plant

Wisteria (Invasive)

a pink, tall purple loosestife plant

Purple Loosestrife (Invasive)

a dark purple bush, called Japanese Barberry, an invasive plant

Japanese Barberry (Invasive)

a yellow and white flower called Japanese Honeysuckle, which is an invasive plant

Demo

Here, we show a demo of our app to classify waste with our AI model. We achieve extremely high accuracies with our trained machine learning model.

About us

We here at Plant Protect are 2 students at Lynbrook High School who are passionate about helping endangered plants. We hope that Plant Protect will enable fellow hikers and nature enthusiasts to do the same for their local environments to protect the natural ecosystem.
